Using a piCO+™ or COmpact™ Smokerlyzer®, midwives and other professionals within maternity can validate smoking status while providing brief intervention and advising on health. Most NHS Stop Smoking Services will have a smoking in pregnancy specialist, meaning that a pathway for referral is often already in place. Routinely testing the CO levels of clients has also been shown to identify unsuspected cases of CO poisoning, which is why Bedfont recommends a CO test be taken at every meeting, regardless of smoking status.
Toxic CO inhaled when smoking restricts the flow of oxygen in the blood of both the mother and foetus, reducing birthweight and increasing the risk of serious complications. The MaternityCO™ Chart displays the expected foetal %COHb and weight at birth in relation to the mother’s Smokerlyzer® reading. Uniquely, the chart also illustrates the dangers of passive smoking to unborn babies, by showing how a partner’s smoking habit and CO levels can relate negatively to the baby’s development.
