The use of a CO monitor, such as the piCO+™, is two-fold. Firstly it helps raise the issues surrounding smoking, providing opportunities for cross-curricular links and independent learning. Lessons such as Science, PSHE and even Drama and English can be themed around smoking. Using the Smokerlyzer® range for CO monitoring emphasises the damaging effects chemicals contained in cigarettes have on the human body, the risks of passive smoking and smoking as an addiction. As important as teaching about the dangers of smoking is offering those who have started smoking information and advice that will allow them to successfully give up. Using CO monitoring with the Smokerlyzer® range adds a motivational angle and a visual display of the damage that smoking causes.
Such methods have been successfully implemented at a secondary school in Manchester. The results, having been very encouraging to both staff and pupils, has led Learning Support Advisor, Sandra Hardman to comment that "given the overall effectiveness I would have no hesitation in recommending that other schools get involved in this type of initiative."
